The goal of networking is to expand your professional
network. There’s no networking rule book that requires you to attend multiple
conferences and company happy hours to be considered successful. There’s no
reason you can’t meet people and have
fun. Say goodbye to forced conversations and consider 1315’s 3 unique ways to
network and enjoy yourself:
1). Reconnect with old classmatesReunions and alumni events are an untapped resource of potential contacts. Reunions offer a room full of people that have diverse interests and careers. Plus, you’re guaranteed to know at least one person there. Not only will you reconnect with old friends, fraternity brothers, and classmates, but you’ll gain a few valuable contacts as well.
2). Get a hobby Have you ever wanted to try sky-diving? Do wish you could make eggplant Parmesan? Does the thought of brewing your own beer excite you? Get a hobby! By engaging in an activity you enjoy, you’re more open to conversation with the people participating with (or around) you. You’ll have the opportunity to open up and make new friends.
3). VolunteerMost fundraisers and large events don’t have issues finding people who want to get dressed up and pay for a nice, expensive dinner. What fundraisers really want (and need) are volunteers. By offering yourself as free labor, you’ll have the opportunity to attend the entire event and meet the “big shot” attendees. The best part? You won’t have to pay $250 for that meal ticket.
