NYC’s Best Undercover Photo Studios

Photo Studio Rental New YorkNYC’s Best Undercover Photo Studios
BY ADAM MARTIN

“A  R E V O L U T I O N  OF
U N I Q U E
D E S I G N”

Laura Little is quietly leading a revolution in NYC. It’s not a political coup or a social upheaval, but a revolution of unique design. It began with her own foray into photography—she has a natural eye for composition—and has since extended to include some of the best underground shoot spaces in the city.
The Big Apple boasts some iconic public spaces, and there are more than a few top-notch private photo studios available for rent. Each space, public and private, offers something a little different, though, and Laura’s studios and 28on27 and 1315 certainly warrant consideration.

What makes them different?

BY A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR A PHOTOGRAPHER
Multiple spaces are available for rental, ranging from as intimate as 750 square-feet of space all the way up to 4,500 square-feet. Each studio is
equipped with the photographer and creative in mind, including lighting, hair & make-up stations and easy set-up for your shoot

LAID BACK ATMOSPHERE THAT'S ALL ABOUT THE SHOOT
The ambience alone sets these spaces apart: rich hardwood floors, available wifi and iPod connections conveniences—tables, racks and freight entrance—to make any photographer feel at home. The environment is both laid-back and fresh, allowing the photographer to concentrate on the shoot.
They are what a photo studio shoot be: a place to focus on the shoot, itself.
Of course, that’s hardly surprising. When a skilled photographer makes her own studios available, you’d expect them to be top of the line, and Laura Little delights in her craft.
You can see it in her photos, as well as in her studio spaces -.

THE INDIE ARTIST
But there’s another reason to choose Laura’s studios over others. Small, independent firms,
like Laura’s, provide photographers and brands with unique shooting locations and help to enrich NYC’s culture in innumerable ways. Sure, there are large commercial firms out there with plenty of amenities and decent pricing, but there’s something to be said for supporting one of your own, especially when the shoot space is so well designed.

Booking 28on27 or 1315 Studios doesn’t just grant you access to hip, clean, well-equipped
studio space. You get more than that. You get a space created for artists like you, by an artist like you.
And, you are supporting one of the things that makes New York such an amazing city—namely, the rich and diverse number of options available for indie artists of all kinds.

28on27 Entrepreneur Laura Little opens up...

January 7th 2012
Entrepreneur Laura Little opens up about her inspiration for 28on27 and 1315 Studios.
28on27 and 1315 weren’t always the venues they are now, but owner Laura Little saw potential in the interiors and with her expertise and passion for art and design, she transformed the spaces into the multi-functional venues they are today.
I sat down with Laura to chat about what inspired her two successful spaces and how she makes it all work:
JK: Why did you choose to name the spaces 28on27 and 1315 the way you did?
LL: The spaces are the buildings’ numbers. So it was easy and organic. You'll never forget where your going..ha.
JK: What’s special about the spaces? What’s their “theme?”
LL: Each space is meant to be comfortable, and easy to make “your own.” I love interesting spaces that are unique and have a different vibe. I think both spaces reflect that. 28on27 has amazing white pillars and black iron window molding. It’s a small detail but when I saw the space I could see it working.
JK: What is your favorite thing about each of the spaces? Is there a specific design feature, piece of artwork, etc, that you feel “makes the space?”
LL: For 1315 it has to be the windows and the high ceilings. The space feels so open and full of air and light. In the afternoon, it’s simply beautiful. 28on27 has more old-school New York charm. And it’s in such an unexpected place! The surprise of it is beautiful.
JK: Do you incorporate your photography into the space? If so, how?
LL: There’s no physical art work hanging in the spaces, but once a year I do an art exhibit, as I'm a photographer (and artist).. and we just opened an online store with the intention to curate and sell photography. My office is also packed with art. So it’s incorporated into the business and our daily lives. Art makes us happy.

JK: What is your most unforgettable memory regarding the spaces?
LL: Hiding in my office from Chris Brown! That's the worst/best memory so far!

JK: Haha! Why did you hide from him? Did he find you?
LL: I can't tell you...but he didn't find me.
