Eco Friendly Baby Shower Gifts? Heck Yeah!

Baby showers are fun, but buying the right gift for a baby shower can be a chore.
Never fear! Below, you’ll find three suggestions that will make your next shopping trip for a baby shower a cake walk. As an added bonus, each of these suggestions is also eco-friendly.

DIAPERS!

Okay, while admittedly not the sexiest of gifts, every new mother is going to need diapers. Consider cloth diapers, like the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. According to Bummis, “A supply of single-use diapers that will last from birth to potty training will cost between $2500-$3000. A stash of cloth diapers that can be used for the same 2 1/2 year period can cost as little as $300.” And these bad boys are the next generation of cloth diapers, featuring Velcro straps and durable elastic along the leg and tummy openings.

BABY’S GOTTA EAT

The Lehman’s Bady Food Mill is both practical and easy to use. “Homemade baby food is safer, cheaper, healthier and easier than buying dozens of jars at the store.” What’s more, this little wonder is highly portable and can be used to quickly puree cooked or soft food, allowing for fresh, 100% natural baby food on the go.

FOR BABY AND MAMA

Earth Mama Baby Angel Organics offers a full line of “essential bundles” that make for great gift baskets. Products include skin care, herbal first aid items and even travel kits. Why not get something for the newborn and the mother-to-be, creating a gift basket that’s sure to impress?

Whatever your budget, one of the above suggestions should fit the bill. Also, if you want to go above and beyond, consider “wrapping” your gift in a reusable fabric bag, and top it off with an eco-friendly greeting card from ecojot.

The Top 3 Board Games to Bring to a Party....

The Top 3 Board Games to Bring to a Party....

Small parties are a great time to rock some low-tech fun. Board games, the original home entertainment system, can really liven up your next gathering. That said, there are a few board game pitfalls to avoid to guarantee a successful start to your year!

PICKING THE RIGHT GAMES

First and foremost, know your crowd. If you’re getting together with a bunch of academics, a trivia-based game like Trivial Pursuit may be a hit, but try busting that out at a family gathering that includes small children and you’re going to have several unhappy campers. The best rule of thumb is to pick games that have relatively simple rules and can easily be played in teams.
Why simple rules? Because you’re going to have to explain the game to everyone, and the longer that takes, the more bored everyone will get. You don’t want setting the game up to feel like work.

Why teams? Because that takes the pressure off individuals (even if they’re  competitive) to win, win, win. Also, fewer teams are better—no more than 4 at the most. If you can divide everyone into 2 teams, that’s probably best. If it’s been a while since you've played board games, you may have no idea which ones will work. No worries. Here are three games you can easily incorporate into your next gathering.

THE GAMES

Cranium is great for mixed crowds because it includes a little bit of everything: charades, Pictionary, light trivia and even Play-Doh. (Yes, there’s Play-Doh. How could that not be fun?) Just make sure everyone has a chance to get involved, jumping in on the questions and categories they’re most comfortable with.

File this under ‘oldie but goodie’. If you haven’t played Clue since you were a kid, you may be surprised at how much fun it is for both children and adults. And, while the game is not designed for team play, it can easily be accommodated. Just one word of warning: the rules aren’t too terribly complicated, but they are a bit lengthy. It may be easiest, especially if there are children involved, for one or two adults to read the rules before hand and bring everyone else up to speed.

3. Uno
Uno isn't’t technically a board game and cannot be played in teams, but it’s a time-tested crowd pleaser. You can get all fancy and go with the “Blast” or “Power Grab” editions, or you can just stick to the original no-frills card game. The biggest upside of Uno is that it’s entirely about blind luck. No one is likely to suffer a bruised ego because they didn't draw a blue seven. On top of that, game play is fast. You can play a couple of rounds quickly, but it remains fun even if you play it for an hour or more.

If you opt for a different game, just remember the following: pick something everyone present can get into. (Generally, that’s going to be something team-based and relatively simple.) And, have fun! Friendly competition is a good thing, but don’t let it go too far!

How to Get Through a Holiday Dinner...

How to Get Through a Holiday Dinner with Family....

The holidays are a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with family and friends. For many of us, that’s what makes this time of year special—not the presents we do or don’t get, but the time we spend with the people we care about. That said, December can be a tough month to navigate without the occasional hiccup.

Because there are so many moving parts, holiday family dinners are a time when tension is likely to rear its ugly head. Here, then, are a few tips for getting through your family’s holiday meals with as little hassle as possible.

Set Your Expectations
You know your family. If your holiday gatherings are like a Norman Rockwell painting, more power to you. Most of us are not so lucky. Instead of going “over the hills and through the woods” with pie-in-the-sky expectations, try to be realistic and—here’s the kicker—content. Your time with family doesn’t have to feel like it’s been sprinkled with elf dust to be magical. Enjoy the company of your loved ones and go easy on yourself and others if there are a few snags here and there.

Part of The Solution
Speaking of snags, if and when you hit them, be part of the solution, not part of the problem. The easiest way to do that is to think big-picture, starting with being thankful for what you have. Little misfires (like burned dinner rolls or dry turkey) aren’t really that big a deal when you keep in mind all the good stuff you have going on.

Remember What Matters
Ultimately, people are more important than things. If the meal isn’t perfect or you don’t get the present you were really banking on, that’s okay. Be assured, worse things could happen. Don’t allow the stuff of holiday get-togethers to disrupt your connection to the people you’re around. The people are always more important.

There isn’t any way to ensure an absolutely stress-free holiday family dinner. But, if you can stay focused on what really matters, even a train-wreck of a meal won’t dampen your holiday spirit. Cheesy as it sounds, when you embrace a the-glass-is-half-full mentality, the holidays really can be a magical time. The trick is deciding now, before you hit those snags and snafus, to attend to your own attitude. The rest of it will work itself out.

Stay Groovy Every Day

Photo Rental Space
Event Space Rental

June 26th 2013
Event Space Rental

Maybe because its Wednesday?!

Maybe it’s because you had one too many glasses of red wine the night before. Maybe it’s because your mother-in-law popped in over the weekend.  Whatever the reason for your foul mood today, it’s time to push the little black cloud hovering over your head away.

The only person responsible for your current mood is you. Having a positive attitude is not something that can be learned. The ability to stay positive and happy is a choice. Your bad mood can’t last forever, eventually you will feel better.

If you can accept the erratic nature of life, it’s much easier to stay relaxed, happy, and calm. Here are 28on27's tips on how to keep on feeling groovy, no matter the mountain load of s**% that's falling:

1). Appreciate each day. Whatever happens, good or bad, you can’t change or get back what happened in the past 24 hours. Live in the moment and appreciate the people and the world around you.

2). Have a dance. Many situations and scenarios are out of our control. But there are a lot of things we can control.  We can choose to be in a good mood. We can choose to eat healthier. We can choose to whack on our power song and groove out.

3). Don’t sweat the small stuff. Ask yourself, “Will this matter in 100 years?” “Will it be a big deal if I don’t get my way?” Practice turning the other cheek.

4). Be thankful. There is always something to be thankful for, no matter what you’re facing in your life. Do you have healthy children? Are you in a warm, loving, relationship? Did you have coffee this morning? Did your Golden Retriever lick you just before you left the house? Think about what you have instead of what you don’t have.

5). What’s the worst that could happen? Paolo Coelho wrote, “The fear of suffering is worse than suffering itself.” Chances are “the worst” isn’t all that bad. You’ll survive even if you butchered today’s presentation. That bad date last night doesn’t mean you won’t ever find true love. A job loss doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll lose everything. Don’t get yourself all worked up about the possible outcomes for each bad thing that happens to you.
